One of the dive sites we run here in Malta — here's the story behind it, the depth and access, and what it takes to dive it properly.
The Tower Wreck takes its name from the coastal tower that guards the entrance to Xlendi Bay on Gozo, high above where it rests at around 105 metres. It is a Classical-era cargo wreck — a mixed cargo of amphorae datable to roughly the 3rd century BC — and a reminder that Malta's seabed holds far more than twentieth-century steel.
Surveyed by Prof. Timmy Gambin's team at the University of Malta as part of their pioneering deep-water archaeology, it's a protected archaeological site dived only by permit. For the few qualified to reach it, it's a genuine piece of ancient Mediterranean trade lying frozen on the bottom.
The diving here suits divers at Advanced Trimix / CCR level. This one sits beyond the 100m limit of open-circuit diving — it’s CCR and dedicated exploration territory. If you’re not there yet, these are the courses that get you there:
Already certified and just want to dive it? Come and explore it with me on open circuit or CCR — one relaxed dive a day, no rushing, as long in the water as you like.
