One of the dive sites we run here in Malta — here's the story behind it, the depth and access, and what it takes to dive it properly.
HMS Urge was a Royal Navy U-class submarine, about 58m long and 4.9m wide, which played a busy part in the Mediterranean campaign against Axis shipping. On 27 April 1942 she struck a mine several kilometres off Malta and was lost with all 44 crew aboard — weeks before HMS Olympus met the same fate, the waters around Malta being heavily mined at the time. Her precise location remained a wartime mystery for over 75 years until she was found in October 2019. She sits upright at about 130m, in good condition apart from a badly damaged bow. Now colonised by colourful fan corals, she is an outstanding deep technical wreck for suitably qualified divers and complements the other submarine wrecks, Stubborn and Olympus.
The diving here suits divers at Advanced Trimix / CCR level. This one sits beyond the 100m limit of open-circuit diving — it's CCR and dedicated exploration territory. If you’re not there yet, these are the courses that get you there:
