The first step into technical diving leadership. If you're serious about a career in technical diving — instructing, guiding, running technical dive operations — this is where it starts. Not a box-tick. A proper professional foundation.
Let me tell you what this programme isn't first: it's not a quick certification you do to add letters after your name. Technical Divemaster is an earned professional qualification that requires you to have genuine technical diving ability and to develop genuine leadership skills underwater. If that sounds like I'm setting a high bar, I am. I have no interest in producing technical divemasters who aren't actually ready for the role.
What this programme is: a bespoke, structured development programme that takes you from competent technical diver to qualified technical dive leader. You'll work alongside me on actual technical dive operations, assist with student management on courses, develop your own technical knowledge to instructor-approaching standard, and learn how to brief, manage and debrief technical dives at a professional level.
The "bespoke" label in the duration isn't a dodge — it reflects reality. How long this takes depends on where you start, how quickly you develop, and what technical certifications you're bringing to it. Some people come in with Trimix Diver certs and strong leadership backgrounds and we can move relatively quickly. Others need more time on the water before the leadership piece is ready. I'll be straight with you about where you are and what it's going to take.
Malta is an excellent place to train as a technical divemaster. The sites are varied, the conditions are generally manageable, and the range from recreational depth all the way to HMS Olympus means you get exposure to the full spectrum of technical diving in a relatively accessible location. You'll know these sites well by the time we're done.
I trained as a technical divemaster before my instructor training, and I can tell you it makes a material difference to the quality of instructor you eventually become. Understanding the leadership responsibilities before taking on the teaching responsibilities means you're not learning two things at once. The groundwork matters.
This is a programme that requires a conversation before booking. Contact me, tell me where you are, where you want to go, and what timeline you're working with. We'll figure out the right structure from there.
Technical Divemaster is the direct prerequisite for TDI Technical Instructor training — the qualification that allows you to certify technical divers independently. It also has immediate practical value: as a qualified Tech DM you can formally assist technical instructors, which means real experience on real courses that builds the record and competence for instructor training.
