The first step into technical diving leadership. If you're serious about a career in technical diving — instructing, guiding, running technical dive operations — this is where it starts. Not a box-tick. A proper professional foundation.
The Technical Divemaster programme is one of the most valuable qualifications a technical diver can hold — and one of the most respected in the industry. It marks the transition from diver to professional: the ability to lead, manage and support technical diving operations at a level that goes far beyond holding a certification card.
The programme is bespoke by design. You'll work alongside Sam on actual technical dive operations, assist with student management on courses, develop your technical knowledge to near-instructor standard, and learn how to brief, manage and debrief technical dives at a professional level. The duration reflects where you start, how quickly you develop, and the certifications you bring to it — candidates with strong backgrounds and recent trimix experience typically progress more quickly than those who need more time on the water first.
Malta provides excellent conditions for this training. The sites are varied and consistently accessible, and the range — from recreational depth right down to deep trimix wrecks like HMS Southwold and ORP Kujawiak — means genuine exposure to the full spectrum of technical diving. The Technical Divemaster pathway is also the natural foundation for the Technical Instructor programme, and building leadership skills before teaching skills makes for a significantly stronger instructor.
This is a programme that requires a conversation before booking. Contact me, tell me where you are, where you want to go, and what timeline you're working with. We'll figure out the right structure from there.
Technical Divemaster is the direct prerequisite for TDI Technical Instructor training — the qualification that allows you to certify technical divers independently. It also has immediate practical value: as a qualified Tech DM you can formally assist technical instructors, which means real experience on real courses that builds the record and competence for instructor training.
