The Site

The Junkers Ju 88 was a German twin-engine, all-metal bomber of the Second World War, about 15m long with a 20m wingspan, used by the Luftwaffe for bombing and reconnaissance. This aircraft was lost during the war (the exact circumstances are not recorded) and discovered in 2009. It rests upside down on sand about 3km off Bahar ic-Caghaq at around 55m, in well-preserved condition though damaged by trawl nets, with the tail section lying intact about 50m from the main fuselage. A technical dive requiring a Heritage Malta permit (since 1 May 2019); its compact size lets divers examine it closely. A second, deeper Ju 88 lies off Marsaskala.
