One of the dive sites we run here in Malta — here's the story behind it, the depth and access, and what it takes to dive it properly.
The Hawker Hurricane was the workhorse fighter that, alongside the Spitfire, defended Malta through the island's darkest days under siege. Less glamorous than the Spitfire but rugged and dependable, Hurricanes did much of the hard fighting in the air battle for the island.
This one rests on the seabed at around 70 metres off Malta, discovered in 2020 during the Malta Shipwreck Survey Project led by Prof. Timmy Gambin's team at the University of Malta. Aircraft wrecks carry a particular poignancy, and a Hurricane — so central to Malta's survival — is a moving thing to see resting on the bottom.
At this depth she's a serious technical and CCR objective, protected by Heritage Malta and dived only by permit — but for those qualified to reach her, she's an extraordinary and historically significant dive.
The diving here suits divers at Trimix 75 level. If you’re not there yet, these are the courses that get you there:
